Fractals of movement by Václav Bednář
Czech painter Václav Bednář's (1974) unique paintings on tempered glass, using the action painting technique that best reflects the artist's creative nature, create objects with a distinct aesthetic effect.
His Out of Control clothing collection is also fresh and original.

One of the key phenomena of contemporary art is the negation of the boundaries between high art, which demands knowledge on the part of the observer, and mainstream society, whose opinion is shaped primarily by consumerist and commercial impulses.

The aforementioned aspects have found their application particularly in postmodern artistic trends based on the plurality of opinions and formal procedures, which are not bound by any stylistic rules. Globalization and the rapid development of information technologies are also blurring the developmental logic and uniqueness of national cultures. In the Czech environment, trends based on the principle of verist narratives are clearly asserting themselves in the field of painting. It's a kind of collage of the world of subjects and fantasy visions with a distinctly narrative content.

The painter and draughtsman Václav Bednář (1975) shares these aspects, not least in his way of perceiving the world as an open, multicultural space. The form of his work, however, has always been shaped primarily by visceral experience of a particular phenomenon and by personal experience. He has been drawing and painting since early childhood. He was strongly supported in his artistic activities by his maternal grandfather, who was a collector of antiques and an art enthusiast. He was well aware of Václav's innate talent and strongly influenced his decision to pursue art at a professional level. The future painter's abilities are highlighted by a series of still lifes inspired by the works of the Baroque Masters, characterized by a perceptive sense of pictorial structure and an advanced culture of pictorial presentation. During his teenage years, he became actively involved in rock music, which matched his dynamic nature and urgent need for freedom.

The many idols of the rock scene and pop culture of the time were also frequent subjects of his paintings and drawings. His intense experiences of musical productions and everyday situations led him to decide to interpret his mental and physical states in a form of free painting. However, in addition to the obvious formal inspiration of action painting, which favors a spontaneous method of execution, Bednář makes a conscious effort to give his objects a distinctive aesthetic impact. He came to painting on tempered glass, which has characterized his expressive and technical originality for many years, by chance, when he was intrigued by the patches of color on the glass of a display case he was using as a palette. He discovered that on the reverse side, the natural intensity of the optical effect of color was multiplied by a layer of transparent material. Tempered glass surfaces thus became for him above all a means of recording highly dynamic images that materialize his creative energy and evoke a series of philosophical and psychological reflections.

Another distinctive feature of Bednář's mentality, and a reflection of our globalized, commerce-obsessed age, is his work in the field of clothing design. He ships his hand-painted T-shirts, jackets and pants in pizza boxes bearing the same motif. Each garment is an original. Over the years, he has put hundreds of people in touch with his work all over the world. On several occasions, he has personally met many wearers of his Out of Control brand, which integrates a commercial product with a unique, optimistic and playful design.

Václav Bednář is an artist who does not seek the meaning of his work in sophisticatedly organized allegories or in the committed attitudes of fashion movements. His work is an artistic articulation of the painter's inner energy and his relationship to the reality in which he lives.
It's a kind of imaginary fractal, a form of unchanging essence in open space and constant movement.
Jiří Hastík, painter, draughtsman, graphic designer, author of works in the applied arts, theorist and curator.
